Simple Things to Do with Baby in the ‘Burbs

There’s so much to do with infants and babies in the city that -- bonus! -- require little or no planning at all. At a moment’s notice you can pop your fussy newborn into her stroller for a quick cruise around the block or to hang at the park. Even in the winter there are museums to wander through, indoor playscapes to explore, kids clubs to navigate and mom-and-me activities to join from infant yoga to swimming for tiny tots. But what happens when you leave the city for (gulp!) the ‘burbs? Don’t panic -- there’s loads for new moms to do in suburbia! And, like the city, it’s all within stroller distance…

We’ve Got Blocks, Too!

NYC doesn’t have a monopoly on taking a stroll around the block. Pack up your baby and pound the pavement! Take a stroll through the neighborhood or around the cul-de-sac and back. If yours isn’t a stroll-able street find something within a quick drive that is -- a downtown in your town or one nearby, a boardwalk near a beach or park or, even, just a cute tree-lined neighborhood. And -- bonus! -- if the weather turns or baby gets too cranky you’re always minutes from his crib, no subway ride or Uber surge price needed.

Shop Til You BOTH Drop

Every stroll with a newborn down Madison Avenue or chic Soho? Window shopping -- or shopping shopping -- might be a great way to kill an afternoon, but not with a baby in tow. In the ‘burbs, though, it’s infinitely easier. Pack up baby and head to the mall -- something totally foreign to urban families -- and stroll around when it is too cold to be outside. Browse your favorite city stores and boutiques, even (suburban malls are getting very high end!), and if baby fusses you can be out and back in the car in seconds. Many malls even have playscapes, nursing mother areas and other baby-friendly spots to ensure your afternoon out is seamless.

Hit the Road!

Any new mom knows that a quick car ride can soothe even the crankiest babies and send them off into a nice, long slumber. In the city that’s not a great option -- who wants to get their car out of the garage, give up their alternate side spot or, worse, strap a wriggly infant into a taxi? Not us.

When all else fails or when the weather just isn’t agreeing hop into the car and go for a spin. Thanks to the beauty of GPS and apps like Waze you don’t even have to know where you’re going. Just strap the both of you in and hit the road. Not only will you lull your little one off to sweet slumbers but you’ll also be able to dig in and explore your new town and extended community. And when you get hungry, thirsty or just need a little pick-me-up, swing through another suburban treasure: the drive-thru. Everything from Starbucks to sweet shops to gourmet eateries have drive-thrus and curbside pick-ups so you can snack while your little one naps.

The ‘burbs are chock-full of great activities for infants, babies and kids -- including plenty of easy ways to get out when the urge arises. Pop your tot in her stroller, car seat or snuggly and get going! Chances are you’ll love what you discover.
