Breast Milk Storage Tips:

  • Always wash your hands thoroughly before handling the storage bag and breastmilk.
  • Label the bag with the date and time your breastmilk was expressed as well as your name if you’re storing the bag in a shared/public refrigerator or freezer.
  • Squeeze out any air from the bag and seal it tightly.
  • Do not store breast milk in the door of the refrigerator or freezer. This will help protect the breast milk from temperature changes that may occur from the door opening and closing.
  • If you don’t think you will use freshly expressed breast milk within 4 days, freeze it right away. This will help to protect the quality of the breast milk.
  • When freezing breast milk:
    • Store the amount of milk that is needed for one feeding to avoid wasting milk that might not be finished.
    • Leave about one inch of space at the top of the container because breast milk expands as it freezes.
    • Store the bag flat in the freezer, making sure it is completely sealed and free from any leaks.
  • Use the oldest stored milk first, following the first-in, first-out (FIFO) method.
  • Breast milk can be stored in an insulated cooler with frozen ice packs for up to 24 hours when you are traveling. At your destination, use the milk right away, store it in the refrigerator, or freeze it.
  • If you need to thaw the breast milk, do so by placing the bag in a bowl of warm water or in the refrigerator. Do not microwave or boil breast milk, as this can destroy important nutrients and immune factors.
  • Once the breast milk is thawed, use it within 24 hours and do not refreeze it.

It's important to remember that these guidelines are just general recommendations, and you should always consult with your healthcare provider for specific recommendations on how to store and handle breast milk.
