Navigating Life as a New Mom - and Away from the City

Navigating Life as a New Mom—and Away from the City

Being a first- (or second- or third-) time mom is, hands down, tough. But in the city you’ve got some unique benefits that other moms don’t. There’s the 24-hour Duane Reade on the corner where you can, and do, grab diapers, wipes, milk, baby food and countless other goodies for you and your little one at literally any hour of the day. There’s the stroller group at the park, the mom’s group down the block, and the playroom in your building. And, of course, if you can’t or don’t have time to track it down, you can have it delivered with a quick click, and that “it” could be anything from breast pump parts to loaner strollers to tonight’s dinner.

So, yes, being an urban mom has plenty of perks. Not only is ours an all-access city, but through its 24/7 pace and proximity both moms and babies have plenty of opportunities to mix, mingle and make new friends almost every day. What happens, though, when that same city duo finds themselves in the ‘burbs, miles from a 24-hour drugstore and void of takeout anything? We’ve been there and we get it. Here are some tips from urban to suburban mamas to help you both navigate and love life in the ‘burbs. Because in NYC you might have the new mom world at your fingertips, but in suburbia you’ve got the space, pace and day-to-day lifestyle you’ve always dreamed about. All you have to do is make your new town your own. And that’s where Suburban Jungle Realty Group comes in! Read on for some of our pro tips.

Find the Moms!

In the city it’s easy, go to any park, playground, building playroom (or lobby for that matter!), meetup or moms group meeting and you’ll find dozens of mamas in your baby-stage. But in the ‘burbs the landscape is so much more spread out and everyone drives everywhere. So say goodbye to running into friends and neighbors at every turn.

To ensure you’ve got a solid mom group think about your interests and lifestyle. Do you work full-time? Love Soul Cycle? Know your way around a kitchen? Like the city there are countless places to find mom friends, be it the gym or studio, moms’ group meeting, kiddie music classes, story hours or even on the train platform. And, chances are, plenty of these new moms are in the same boat as you and would love to get a playdate on the calendar. Just remember you can’t count on the spontaneity and access you had in NYC -- but moms are aplenty in the ‘burbs, too!

Tot story time, weekend music classes, mom and me yoga, and the list goes on. Just like the city there are countless kids’ activities either in your immediate town or within a quick drive. But, no matter what your child’s schedule looked like before, now it’s even more important for you to enroll him in at least 1-2 activities or classes from an early age. There are tons of programs for babies that start as young as four months old. So start ‘em early and keep ‘em coming! These classes are amazing opportunities for new suburban families to meet other families and get the lay of the land while forging lifetime friendships for everyone.

Stock Up -- and SHIP

So long, 24-hour Duane Reade, Seamless and FreshDirect...hello, planning ahead! Yes you’ll likely mourn the loss of the incredible access to everything and anything once you head to the ‘burbs but, with a little planning and some online ordering know-how you’ll never miss a beat. Peapod is Stop & Shop’s delivery service and FreshDirect is constantly expanding their delivery area. Or you can just head to the grocery store! Chances are you’ll be wowed by how big the aisles are, how many options you’ve got and how low the prices are compared to the city.

Separately, there are tons of services like Soap.com and Diaper.com’s auto-ship programs that ensure you’ve got the baby and personal care goods and gear you need before you need it. You’ll literally never run out of diapers, wipes, bottles, snacks or purees again, since everything ships based on your family’s schedule. Amazon has a similar system in place for popular kid go-tos, and hey, having a package show up on your doorstep might be easier that trudging to Duane Reade minutes before bedtime with a cranky infant in tow.

If you’re an urban mama preparing for life in the ‘burbs, we get it -- we’ve been there, too! And now we at the Suburban Jungle Realty Group are available 24/7 to share insights, swap stories and help you find the community that’s right for you right now. Our unique system looks at your family’s entire lifestyle -- not just real estate -- to help connect you with a community that fits. And, best of all, our services are FREE. Check out our interactive questionnaire now which helps guide you towards some key considerations in your urban-to-suburban move. After that we’ll match you with a Suburbs Specialist who will take it from there!
